Model Escape is a love letter to the director, Antonioni. It is a conversation with his seminal film, Blow-Up. Model Escape addresses the narrative dilemma of illusion and reality, using the exact London location of the film and having John Pearse design the costume, whose dress was donned by the model Veruschka von Lehndorff in the poster and film Blow-Up. The protagonist, played by David Hemmings, proves to be an unreliable interlocutor throughout the film as he believes he has witnessed a murder in a photograph, which he enlarges in the darkroom.
Model Escape continues that line of thought in an alternate universe where the model escapes the studio's vicinity, chasing something unseen while being seen. The freedom of movement contradicts the visually arresting frame, as she exists only within the world of Blow-Up. David, in the last scenes, is seen observing two mimes playing imaginary tennis. David picks up a non-existent ball from the grass and throws it over the fence to the court as if it were real, thus embracing the illusion.
Model Escape is set in today's London. In this film, the ball is seen from both the audience's and the model's perspectives, who throws it onto the tennis court with no one on it.
