J.W. Benson 1950S
J.W. Benson made their mark by holding royal warrants from the Tsar of Russia, Queen Victoria, and the Kings of Siam and Denmark. After their factory was bombed in WWII, they stopped manufacturing their own movements and operated as a retailer on Bond Street. This piece uses a German movement by Lacher & Co. (Laco) of Pforzheim, hence marked “Foreign”. Since Laco’s factories were destroyed in Allied bombing and didn’t resume production until 1949, this watch was likely made circa the early-to-mid 1950s. There is an air of restraint to their watches post war era, which complemented the case gracefully.

Charles-Édouard Guillaume was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1920 for his work on nickel–steel alloys, notably Invar and Elinvar. Working at the International Bureau of Weights and Measures in Sèvres, he developed Invar, prized for its near-zero thermal expansion, followed by Elinvar, whose elasticity remains stable across temperature changes.
Elinvar brought new consistency to balance springs, the beating heart of a mechanical watch. Helping timepieces remain precise despite shifts in temperature and the growing presence of electromagnetic interference in modern life. Early anti-magnetic watches, such as this Tissot, stand as a direct expression of that progress.
